The Importance of Bees - Tiny Insects with a Giant Role

Why are bees important? Bees are pollinators: they help many flowering plants reproduce, supporting both wild habitats and food production. They are important, but they are not the only pollinators, and not every crop depends on them.

What does pollination mean?

Pollination is the transfer of pollen that enables fertilization in flowering plants. Bees, butterflies, moths, birds and other animals can contribute; some plants instead rely on wind or other processes.

Do bees pollinate 75% of our food?

That familiar claim needs context. FAO's 2025 pollination overview states that approximately 75% of the world's leading crop types producing fruits and seeds for people depend at least partly on pollinators. This refers to crop types, not 75% of the volume of all food, and includes pollinators other than bees.

Honey is only part of the story

The value of bees is not limited to products from a hive. Their role as pollinators matters even when a bee produces no honey for people. Keeping that distinction in mind makes bee conservation a broader story than beekeeping alone.

How can you support pollinators?

FAO recommends planting a variety of locally native flowers that bloom at different times. Choose plants suited to your location and follow local guidance on protecting pollinator habitat.

Frequently asked questions

Would all food disappear without bees?

No. Pollinator dependence varies between crops. This does not diminish their importance, but it is more accurate than saying every food relies on bees.

What does bee jewelry symbolize?

Bee designs are often chosen as personal reminders of community, purpose and the natural world. These are symbolic interpretations, not promises of a particular outcome.
